Oon & Bazul proud to be a Bronze Sponsor of the ASEAN Law Conference 2018
Oon & Bazul is proud to be a bronze sponsor of the upcoming ASEAN Law Conference, an event held in conjunction with the 13th ASEAN Law Association (ALA) General Assembly organised by the ALA (Singapore). The ALA was formed in 1979 by the legal communities in ASEAN to foster better understanding and cooperation. Representing the Firm at the conference will be Managing Partner & Head of Dispute Resolution Bazul Ashhab and Head of Corporate Oon Thian Seng.
Carrying the theme “The Power of One: Unlocking Opportunities in ASEAN Through Law”, ALA’s vision for the conference is to create and curate a world-class legal conference focused on thought-leadership issues pertaining to ASEAN. More than 550 professionals and delegates hailing from the ASEAN Member States and beyond will be in attendance. It is a unique platform for Chief Justices, Attorneys-General, judges, government lawyers, academia and legal practitioners to convene and interact.
The event happening from 25-28 July will commence with an ALA Golf Tournament on the first day, followed by a three-day conference held at the Raffles City Convention Centre.
Gracing the opening ceremony with a welcome address will be Chairman of ALA (Singapore) and Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, followed by an address by ALA President Atty. Avelino V. Cruz and ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi respectively. The keynote address will be delivered by Minister for Finance, Mr. Heng Swee Keat, on the topic of “The Role of Law in Economic Integration and Development”.
The programme line-up includes a series of plenary and parallel sessions. Topics that will be discussed include:
- Opportunities and challenges in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) including financial integration
- Dispute resolution and law as an instrument to facilitate the success of the AEC
- Disruptive technologies on ASEAN business landscapes
With Singapore as this year’s ASEAN Chair, the session is timely to commemorate the nation’s chairmanship of the regional bloc. It also marks the third general assembly hosted in the country, with the last being held in 2003.
